Introduction
Riverside Cottage is available to visitors to enjoy as a guesthouse.
Pre-arrival
Riverside Cottage is adjacent to the River Torridge flanked by formal gardens and woodland. The house is approximately 1 mile from Bideford Quay on the A386 towards Torrington and set below the road.
Leaving Bideford Quay with the River Torridge on your left you will pass the police station on your right, carry straight on over the mini roundabout, the road takes you up an incline with the imposing rock face to your right and the river opening out on the left. Riverside Cottage is just a quarter of a mile after the 2nd lay-by.
The nearest railway station is Barnstaple, which is approximately 15 minutes by car.
There is a footpath outside the house, which leads to Bideford town centre and quay; this will take 20 minutes to walk.
If you intend to enjoy walking through the woodlands of the property, it is advisable to bring your wellies or good walking boots – and Jeans & Jacket or something similar to avoid cuts or scratches. All activity undertaken at Riverside Cottage is taken at your own risk and you should take due care and attention at all times. Riverside Cottage will not be liable for any incidents or accidents while wondering through the woodlands or on the River.
Arrival and car parking
We have space to park 3 cars outside our garage, which is accessed via dropped kerb from the main road. A steep smooth, tarmac drive leads down to a level area outside the front door for unloading/loading only. All guests should not park here permanently. Please take special care when driving down the driveway.
Street lamps illuminate the car park and driveway at night.
We are happy to assist with luggage.
Main Entrance
From the driveway, there are 2 steps onto an area outside the front of the house and then 1 step onto the porch up to a wide side hung door and a step over the threshold into the lobby.
There is a bell at the front door to call for assistance.
The ground floor is level solid oak flooring.
We will show guests to their rooms and explain what facilities we have to offer.
Ground Floor Public areas
A carpeted staircase with a half landing accesses the first floor with a handrail on the right-hand side. There are 10 steps to the half landing with 5 further steps to the first floor.
Due to the age and style of this property there are no downstairs bedrooms or lift to the first floor.
The downstairs cloakroom is next to the front door on the same level.
The guest lounge and dining room is located on the ground floor and accessed from the lobby by two steps.
Guest Lounge and Dining room
Double half glass doors and two steps from the lobby lead into the guest lounge and dining room.
The guest lounge and dining room is carpeted throughout.
Breakfast is served in the dining room.
Ambient music may be played at breakfast.
There are books, board games & DVDs available for all guests to borrow from the guest library in the lounge – if you remove any of the above items please ensure you return them prior to departure so that other guest may enjoy them too.
Double French doors lead to the middle terrace where there is a sunken floor level pond without barriers.
Bedrooms
All the bedrooms are located on the first floor and are accessed from the 1st floor level hallway.
All bedrooms have fitted carpets.
All bedrooms have central heating, luxury hospitality tray with cordless kettle, good selection of teas, coffee & hot chocolate and hairdryer.
All of the bedrooms have brand new modern and stylish en-suite bathrooms
Beds are made up with 2 pillows per person and winter/summer duvets – depending on the season.
Pillows and duvets are goose down and are anti allergen.
The balcony room has a two 3ft 6in zip link single beds. These can be joined together to make up a super king-size bed. French doors leading out onto the terrace. The terrace has one step back into the bedroom.
The Garden Room has a double bed.
The Courtyard Room has a king size bed.
Bathrooms
All bathrooms are tiled.
The floors are heated.
All towels are provided.
The Balcony room (Twin/Super-King) has an en-suite, which contains a wet room style shower with a 45cm smooth slide door, a single basin with separate taps, a W.C. and a heated towel rail.
The Garden room (double) has an en-suite bathroom with a bath with mixer taps, handgrips and an electric power shower. There is a two-part shower screen, which opens away from the bath to access the taps and shower. There is also a single basin with mixer taps and a W.C. This room is heated by radiator. There is also a grab bar over the bath.
The Courtyard room (King-size) has an en-suite bathroom, which contains a bath with separate taps, handgrips and electric power shower. There is also a two-part shower screen, which opens away from the bath to access the taps and shower. There is also a single basin with mixer taps and a W.C. This room is heated by radiator. There is also a grab bar over the bath.
Gardens
The formal gardens can be accessed from the guest dining room or from the decked terrace leading from the front of the house.
From the dining room, the double French doors lead to the middle decked terrace where there is a sunken floor level pond without barriers. You can also step directly onto the lawn.
There is one step up to the paved patio where there is an elevated pond standing at 1 metre high.
From the patio, there are four steps, which lead onto a gravel path that follow the perimeter edge of the garden.
Three steps lead down to the lower decked terrace, which looks out over the river.
From the lower decked terrace, there are nine steps with a handrail that leads down to the riverbank. There is a covered well at the bottom to the right of the steps and crazy paving leads onto a grassy footpath alongside the river.
Next to the crazy pavement area is a further four steps leading down onto the riverbank, which may become submerged at high tide. The riverbank is a one-metre drop from the grassy footpath.
Woods
The woods are access from the driveway at the front of the house. There is a gated entrance beside Riverside Studio, which leads around to the wood shed area. There is a loosely trodden path, which meanders through the woods overlooking and alongside the river. There are no safety barriers on the woodland river bank so it is imperative that if guests wish to explore the woods they stay on the paths indicated.
The path leads through the woods until it reaches a stream. Take care when crossing over the stream as the area may be slippery. The path continues up a gradual incline until it reaches the main road.
Additional Information
Riverside Cottage by law and the owners wishes is a non smoking establishment, however guests are welcome to smoke on the decked terrace. Ashtrays are available upon request.
FREE Wi-Fi internet access is available to all guests with laptops or Internet enabled handsets. Wi-Fi access name is Riverside Cottage, a password is not required.
Mobile phone signals for the majority of providers are generally excellent.
